Well.
I think I’ve figured it out.
I rewatched Rose tonight - well, the good bits - and I realised how fantastic Eccleston’s acting is -
The moment when he asks Rose if she wants to come with him, and she says no - without doing a thing you can read the pain on his face. And when you know the character, you understand that no, and how much it meant - because he has to walk back, alone, to the console, go off again, alone, the last of his kind.
And Eccleston showed it all with one facial expression.
Genius acting skills.
